This is an important resource for local and family historians. Local historian Percy Woods (1842-1922) left to the Museum his collection of deeds documenting local property transactions dating back to 1511 and his meticulous transcripts of documents relating to the Godalming area, sources of detailed information about local properties and families from the 12th to the early 20th centuries.
The deeds are catalogued, and the catalogue can be viewed on the National Archives Discovery site discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk. Original deeds cannot be photocopied, but can be viewed in Godalming Museum local studies library.
The transcripts have been indexed. The ‘Percy Woods index’ can be searched only through the Museum local studies library firstname.lastname@example.org. The pages have been digitised and copies can be supplied. The index can be searched in various ways:
